Theses
Here you will find information about writing a thesis at the Professorship of Marketing. Please choose the form of thesis you are interested in:
Requirements
During their bachelor thesis, students work independently on an empirical project. The topics of the work are based on practical problems, often in cooperation with companies. Therefore, students should have participated in the bachelor seminar “Scientific Writing” of the Professorship of Marketing.
Parallel to writing the bachelor thesis, the project seminar is attended. On a regular basis, the status of the bachelor thesis is presented and discussed in the project seminar. After handing in the bachelor thesis, the results will be presented and discussed in front of the other participants.
Since all topics are empirical, the time for writing the bachelor thesis is 13 weeks in total.
Supervision
The supervision of the bachelor theses is primarily carried out by the lecturer who is responsible for the project seminar in each semester.

Requirements
Marketing should be a major course of study. Students should have attended the courses "Customer Management (former Marketing Engineering)", "Industrial Marketing", the master seminar or "Concepts & Cases in International Marketing". Furthermore, experiences with methods of empirical social research are required. To write the master thesis, 60 ECTS credits must have been achieved.
Objectives
In the master thesis, students deal with a specific problem in a scientific way. For this purpose, existing concepts and empirical research results from marketing science are applied. In addition, the problem is examined by using the methods of qualitative and/or quantitative social research. Based on the findings, students develop managerial implications and recommendations for future research. Since all topics are empirical, the time for writing the master thesis is 26 weeks in total.
Application period
The application period for Master's theses in the summer semester 2023 runs from 30.01.2023 to 12.02.2023. Please apply during this period with the documents listed below to Fabienne Ruoss. The application for a tutoring place does not include an award guarantee.
Application and assignment of topics
If you want to write your master thesis at the Chair of Marketing, please contact Fabienne Ruoss and send her the following application documents:
- a current transcript of grades
- a current curriculum vitae
- a letter of motivation and
- the completed application form
Please fill in all relevant data in the given form (pdf). Please enclose the completed form with your application documents and send them to Ms. Ruoss.
The letter of motivation should indicate whether you have a company with which / for which you would like to write your thesis. Furthermore, you should tell us which preferences you have in the choice of topic (e.g. FMCG, B-2-B marketing, international marketing, etc.) and, if applicable, which methodology you would like to use for your research (Qualitative or quantitative design? Which method is preferred?).
If possible, application should be sent one to two months before you would like to write your thesis. Together with Professor Holzmüller and the supervising team member, you will be able to find a topic for your work. The professorship offers a number of different topics. For example, it can be a question from a current research project or a cooperation with a company. Students can also look for their own topics, for example by approaching companies themselves. In this case, the professorship will decide whether the topic can be supervised by us. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Ruoss.
Supervision
The supervision of the master thesis is designed to accompany the project. Students should actively maintain contact with the supervisor in order to avoid mistakes and not lose sight of the agreed objectives.
Dates for the final presentation
Please contact your advisor to schedule your final presentation.

Location & approach
The campus of TU Dortmund University is located close to interstate junction Dortmund West, where the Sauerlandlinie A 45 (Frankfurt-Dortmund) crosses the Ruhrschnellweg B 1 / A 40. The best interstate exit to take from A 45 is "Dortmund-Eichlinghofen" (closer to Campus Süd), and from B 1 / A 40 "Dortmund-Dorstfeld" (closer to Campus Nord). Signs for the university are located at both exits. Also, there is a new exit before you pass over the B 1-bridge leading into Dortmund.
To get from Campus North to Campus South by car, there is the connection via Vogelpothsweg/Baroper Straße. We recommend you leave your car on one of the parking lots at Campus North and use the H-Bahn (suspended monorail system), which conveniently connects the two campuses.
TU Dortmund University has its own train station ("Dortmund Universität"). From there, suburban trains (S-Bahn) leave for Dortmund main station ("Dortmund Hauptbahnhof") and Düsseldorf main station via the "Düsseldorf Airport Train Station" (take S-Bahn number 1, which leaves every 20 or 30 minutes). The university is easily reached from Bochum, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg.
You can also take the bus or subway train from Dortmund city to the university: From Dortmund main station, you can take any train bound for the Station "Stadtgarten", usually lines U41, U45, U 47 and U49. At "Stadtgarten" you switch trains and get on line U42 towards "Hombruch". Look out for the Station "An der Palmweide". From the bus stop just across the road, busses bound for TU Dortmund University leave every ten minutes (445, 447 and 462). Another option is to take the subway routes U41, U45, U47 and U49 from Dortmund main station to the stop "Dortmund Kampstraße". From there, take U43 or U44 to the stop "Dortmund Wittener Straße". Switch to bus line 447 and get off at "Dortmund Universität S".
The H-Bahn is one of the hallmarks of TU Dortmund University. There are two stations on Campus Nord. One ("Dortmund Universität S") is directly located at the suburban train stop, which connects the university directly with the city of Dortmund and the rest of the Ruhr Area. Also from this station, there are connections to the "Technologiepark" and (via Campus Süd) Eichlinghofen. The other station is located at the dining hall at Campus Nord and offers a direct connection to Campus Süd every five minutes.
The AirportExpress is a fast and convenient means of transport from Dortmund Airport (DTM) to Dortmund Central Station, taking you there in little more than 20 minutes. From Dortmund Central Station, you can continue to the university campus by interurban railway (S-Bahn). A larger range of international flight connections is offered at Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), which is about 60 kilometres away and can be directly reached by S-Bahn from the university station.
The facilities of TU Dortmund University are spread over two campuses, the larger Campus North and the smaller Campus South. Additionally, some areas of the university are located in the adjacent "Technologiepark".
